Description

A Frenchman in Early Kentucky gives us insight into daily living in Millersburg, a small town in Bourbon County, Kentucky. John Savary and Lewis Vimont both settled there after emigrating from their native France. The opened a general store around 1796 . Vimont is better known today since he had numerous descendants and a street bears his name. Savary, less well known, explored the America frontier and wrote about it for European readers, served in the Kentucky legislature, and wrote poetry in his leisure hours.

In letters to his friend Robert Alexander (who lived in Woodford County) Savary offers an intimate glimpse into his daily life, his struggle to survive in exile from his homeland, his problems managing money, his thoughts and dreams. These letters form the heart of the book.

None of the documents have ever been brought to light before; most are translated from the original French for the first time.
